Calm horses
from a harsh landscape
Preserving the Norwegian Dole horse and Norwegian rural traditions in the United States.
Norwegian heritage in
the United States
At The Norwegian Stables,
we breed Norwegian Dole Horses.
The Dole Horse is one of Norway’s endangered native horse breeds. Our work is rooted in preserving the horses, and also the culture, knowledge, and rural traditions that have surrounded them for generations.
What we do
Originally from Gudbrandsdalen in Norway,
the Dole horse has been part of Scandinavian life for generations as a trusted workhorse, driving horse, and companion. Today, with only a few thousand remaining worldwide, the breed depends on careful long-term stewardship to survive.
Through our breeding program in the United States, we aim to protect and continue a living piece of Norwegian heritage. This is about carrying meaningful traditions forward with responsibility and respect for where they come from.
Our Heritage-Hub
A place to belong
“This isn’t just about Norwegian Dole horses.
It’s for people who care about what’s behind them. The history, the work, and the culture that shaped them.”
We are gradually building a small cultural space centered around Norwegian rural heritage, including traditional clothing such as the bunad and festdrakt, historical photographs and artwork, educational displays exploring the role of the Dole horse in Norwegian society, and carefully selected Norwegian goods connected to knitwear traditions, food culture, craftsmanship, and everyday life in Norway.
